Photography has been my passion since childhood, but it has only been in recent years that I have been able to pursue it as a professional activity. For many years of my adult life, professional photography equipment and film processing was simply too expensive. However, the revolutionary changes brought on by digital technology and the more general decrease in the price of advanced consumer electronics have meant that over the past few years I have finally had the chance to indulge my passion. Having spent a number of years carrying out some freelance photography work, and having also taken a diploma course in photography, I now feel that I have the skills and the portfolio to be able to complete a bachelor’s degree in photography. My first introduction to photography came as a child, when my father allowed me to use his film camera. I was hooked on photography from the first moments that I learnt the basics of shutter speed and focal length, and whenever I had the opportunity I photographed virtually everything, relishing the opportunity of experimenting with different lights and types of shot. The majority of my training in the basics of photography came about through experimentation and self-study, a process which I feel has ultimately helped me to develop a highly intuitive approach to photography. However, I have always been eager to gain formal and professional training so as to benefit from the wisdom and experience of photography experts. Initially the classes I took were more informal and self-contained. Later, however, I took the First Diploma in Art and Design in Photography, an experience that really helped my understanding of different techniques and principles come on in leaps and bounds. I have also avidly read a wide range of books and magazines on photography, and I am a subscriber to both the British Journal of Photography and Digital Photo .

Over the last few years I have become increasingly committed to pursuing a career in photography. It has been a joy to set up my own website and develop a portfolio that contains a wide range of different landscape and portrait shots, in areas ranging from fashion to travel. I am pleased to say that I am also beginning to develop substantial experience in carrying out professional shoots, and have provided photographic services for a number of different individuals, organisations and events. In some ways my main day job of being a driving instructor has been a good preparation for the freelance life; through this work I am familiar with the importance of developing and maintaining good relations with clients, seeking out new opportunities for work and handling the financial aspects of self-employment.

It is my firm aspiration to become a full-time professional photographer. I believe that by studying photography at university I will gain a broad and deep understanding of photography as an art form, a profession, and an industry. My current philosophy of photography is based around a desire to capture the atmosphere at the moment through paying attention to the details of the shot, whilst also retaining a simplicity that ensures that my photographers have a powerful visual impact. I hope that through taking an advanced-level course in photography I will gain the skills that will allow me to fully realise this vision and in turn equip me for the demands of a career as a professional photographer.

Whether its a curse or a blessing, I fear that this personal statement will differ greatly from the majority for the reason that unlike many who aspire to study Photography in higher education I unfortunately cannot claim to have been an avid photographer for the entirety of my life. It has only been in recent years that I have discovered the art form of photography. But once discovered it was unlike starting any other hobby, to me it felt closer to reuniting with an old friend, no other activity before or since has felt so natural to me.

I think deep down the desire to become a photographer has been within me for a long time but It wasn't until a particularly bleak period in my life that I finally made the choice to begin my relationship with photography. I was living in cornwall and suffering from fairly intense and constant anxiety. Constantly in a state of disorientating fear I needed a way to ground myself. I was living from pay cheque to pay cheque and didn't really have much money to spare but one day I walked into Argos and bought myself a ‘Fujifilm FinePix S4300 Bridge Camera’. After what felt like a lifetime of bad decisions this was the decision that led to me becoming the person who I am today.

I very quickly fell completely in love with photography. I spent much of my spare time walking around taking photographs, learning all that I could through a combination of both trial and error and a helpful group on flickr comprised of other beginner photographers. Photography allowed me to take control of my life again and gave me a renewed sense of self confidence, my anxiety started to disappear and I knew that this was what I needed to spend my life doing. I made the decision to return home from cornwall with the intention of going back to college to study photography and pursue a career within my newfound passion. In hindsight this is exactly what I should have done, instead however I was convinced to work a full time job whilst keeping photography a hobby as it “made more financial sense”.

My hardworking nature was quickly recognised within my job and I found myself being quickly promoted, having both my hours and responsibilities increased. It wasn't long before I found that I had almost no time for photography and my camera was left to gather dust on a shelf. But life has a funny way of getting you back on track.

I was unhappy in my job and I wanted nothing more than to find a career I was passionate in, this led to me wondering if education would be suitable to my character. I gained a job as a Learning Support Assistant working in a provision for High Functioning Autistic students at the local school I attended when I was younger. I was assigned a student to act as Key Worker to, It was this student who reminded me of my passion for photography. The students within our provision have a reduced timetable, the lessons where they are not within mainstream are ‘lifeskills’ lessons and are a chance for them to unwind or learn other life skills. My student was crazy about photography.

I found myself running photography themed life skills lessons for my student. At last my camera was back off the shelf and getting regular use again, both in the school and in my own time. The happiness and sensation of belonging I once felt returned and even stronger than before, I used the internet to discover the genres of photography that interested me the most and found out about the photographers who define these styles. I was heavily inspired by local Alternative Portrait Photographer Derek Johnston, this led to me discovering Glyn Dewis, Aaron Nace, Adrian Sommeling and Calvin Hollywood. All these photographers have similar styles that are all heavily complemented by photoshop which I have now begun to use in my images.

At the beginning of this year I again made the decision to pursue a career in photography, I knew I needed to come out of my photographic shell and start getting myself noticed and talked about. I enjoy photographing interesting and alternative portraits this has led to me photographing some local cosplayers, airsofters and a string of photos for use in a friends clothing line. I am my harshest critic and know I have a lot to learn but my photos have been well received, getting online features from Cosplay Culture magazine, multiple shares from ‘StarsofCosplay’ instagram account and my friends clothing line has also started very successfully. I enjoy learning from each shoot, but working full time alongside wanting to pursue photography is very restricting. I know I need time and room to experiment, learn and finesse my photographic technique, I began an Online Photography Diploma with The Photography Institute at the beginning of this year that is due to finish in June, Im confident that this combined with my life experiences will provide me with the basis I will need to begin higher education in photography.

Besides photography I enjoy exercise in most forms, I am incredibly keen on adrenaline raising sports such as martial arts, airsofting, long boarding and snowboarding. Im a huge lover of most things sci-fi and enjoy reading novels and watching films in this genre. Since discovering photoshop I also enjoy photo manipulating and retouching photographs for cosplayers.

I desire a future wherein I spend my time doing what I love and enjoy, this is what I hope to gain through university, It is a shame I didn't discover my passion until after the age one typical attends university, but I think I needed to mature into the person I am now. Im ready for the opportunities and challenges that university will present me and its a journey I cant wait to undertake.

I have been fascinated by the power of the photographic image ever since I first saw Nick Ut’s famous ‘Napalm Girl’ picture of Kim Phuc. I was mesmerised that a simple picture could communicate such sadness, such power and such emotion. As I learned more about the shot, I discovered that the picture had gone far beyond that, changing attitudes thousands of miles away in the USA, and perhaps even changing the course of history. I knew then that I wanted to be a photographer myself.

You only have to look on image sites like Getty Images or Shutter Stock to see the vast range of ideas and emotions that can be captured by a photograph. Not only do pictures paint a thousand words, but they do so in an international language that everyone can appreciate.

It has not been easy to pursue my dream, especially with the high cost of decent photographic equipment, but I was not about to be put off so easily. The local Jessops knew they were on to a good thing when I started working for them at weekends, because they got back every penny I earned in purchases. Nonetheless, this has allowed me to put together a quite impressive set of kit.

My pursuit of a career in photography led naturally to me applying to study a photography course at college. The course is open to students of all ages and this has given me many different perspectives on the subject. My course has also given me access to a wider range of equipment than I was able to get when I was at school. I have been lucky enough to work with black and white and colour film, as well as the very latest in digital cameras. I have also learned basic film processing techniques, and have even persuaded my parents to black out the utility room window so I can practice at home.

My ambition is to become a press photographer overseas, and I would love to capture an iconic image like Nick Ut. However, I am also realistic and I appreciate that there will be a lot of weddings, local newspaper work and cheesey church fetes that I will have to photograph between then and now.

I have an artist’s eye, but sadly not an artist’s hands. I cannot draw or paint in any way that comes even close to the art I can create with my camera. Similarly, I am not particularly sporty, but I can take a cracking action shot of any match to go on the back page. Photography is who I am and what I do and I can’t imagine studying anything else or doing anything else as a career.

I know that this is a highly competitive industry, especially in the area that I would like to work, but I believe that I am good enough to compete and I am not afraid to work hard to get better and hone my craft. This course is the obvious next step for me, and I hope that you will consider my application favourably.

For as long as I can remember, visual and performing arts have been at the centre of my life. From drama productions, to after-school ceramics groups and learning Cello and Piano, expressing myself creatively is my passion. My interest in Photography was sparked through my love of fashion, and it has become my ambition to one day have my own work commissioned for magazines such as Vogue.

I am currently undertaking an Arts Foundation Course in preparation for university study. I have been building on my extensive and varied Photography portfolio that I created for my Art & Design A-level, some of which was displayed publicly through a college exhibition. My recent experiments with textiles have helped me appreciate the use of different textures and materials in photographic compositions, particularly the differing ways that light reflects off them. This has helped to develop my own unique style of photography, from which I gain inspiration from the natural surroundings, my family and friends, my travels and the fashion media. I have been particularly motivated by the exhibits of Alexander McQueen and Yoko Ono at the Royal Academy’s recent AWARE art and fashion identity exhibition. A visit to Barcelona to view the work of Dali and Miro also had a lasting effect on me.

Over the past three years I have also compiled a number of scrapbooks, incorporating photographs, cuttings and materials. These projects display my belief that photography can capture a life span in one shot, that it can see through the outer layers that we all portray through to the very soul and true emotion of the subject matter. I find Corrine Day’s work from the early 1990’s inspirational because of the way she manages to delve beneath the surface of her models and convey strong emotions. I spend a lot of time studying fashion photography in magazines such as Vogue and ID. I want to learn how to produce such powerful images during a Photography degree, so that my work will in the future be recognised and appreciated.

I also look forward to building on my editing skills during a Photography degree. I have completed a Key Skills Certificate Level 2 in Information & Communication Technology, and am already competent with the use of Photoshop, so am equipped with the basic technical skills to learn more complex post-production techniques.

I am currently seeking part-time work with a professional photographer to compliment my academic studies. I also spent 7 months in 2009 working in TKmaxx, which gave me a valuable insight into fashion retailing and enabled me to buy my Cannon ES, which is now never far from my side. In my spare time I have taken music and drama exams and dedicated time and effort to charity work.

I have been on two pilgrimages to Lourdes to help elderly and disabled people visit the shrines there, competed in two charity bed races to raise funds for children with Muscular Dystrophy and sky dived in aid of Alzheimer’s. These experiences were challenging at times but the friendships I have built and the satisfaction I have gained from making a difference to other people’s lives made the hard work all worthwhile. I developed patience, independence, excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team. I am a highly self-motivated individual who has a clear vision of where I want to go in life and what I need to do to get there. My dedication to a Photography degree is the necessary next step to achieving my ambitions, and one I look forward to with excitement.
