Title: Should schools require a dress code?

Introduction A. Dress codes in schools are connected to the culture and management of the school, and has several impacts on the students. This may influence the student’s behavior, attitude, interactions, and ultimately their academic performance. B. Thesis statement: School codes are beneficial to students and teachers in schools since they instill several positive habits and reduce distraction, resulting to increased focus to students' academic performance.

Build Good Habits A. School dress codes imply that similar type of clothing are worn every day, hence the students will not have to focus so much on their appearance and clothes to wear all the time, and will instead concentrate on school work, become more disciplined, and focus in their development. B. “The much expected classroom order is made possible by helping the student to concentrate in his or her academic work” (Ojogbane et al. 174). C. Dress codes emphasize on decent dressing, promote socially acceptable image, and instill discipline, which can prepare students to the labor markets and encourage the habit of dressing well (Ojogbane et al. 174).

Create Level Playing Field A. School dress codes increase the chances of students wearing the same kind of outfits, resembling school uniforms, and this creates a level playing field and uniformity among all the students, therefore reducing appearance peer pressure, social conflict, and bullying. B. Conflict may arise among the students because different cultures and upbringing allow different kinds of dressing, which emphasize students’ social and cultural differences, and this may bring about competition, self-consciousness, and rejection (Anierobi et al. 80). C. “Indecent dressing is one of the social threats in our contemporary society” (Anierobi et al. 80).

Enhance Unity and Pride A. School dress codes can connect the students to their school identity enhancing their school pride, bring unity among the students, and encourage the spirit of community. B. Research shows that school uniformity is connected to school belongingness, and makes students feel close with their classmates and teachers (Ansari, Shepard, and Gottfried 283). C. Woo et al. state that school codes and uniforms “establish a sense of similarity, community, and national identity among a diverse ethnic groups”, hence promote people to live in harmony and encourage partnership (1871).

Have Financial Impact A. School dress codes can also save money, as there will be less pressure for the students to keep up with different fashions and expensive trends.
