CAA-Accreditation Standards for SLP Programs

The Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) is the semi-autonomous accrediting arm of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

CAA accreditation serves as ASHA’s stamp of educational excellence for SLP graduate programs . Students of these programs can be assured that they’ll gain the core set of knowledge and skills required to bring excellence to professional practice. Accreditation is based on six program components:

• Program resources

CAA-accredited graduate programs are recognized as having certain universal attributes that allow them to qualify for the distinguished programmatic accreditation:

• Regionally accredited
• Regularly perform internal evaluations to reassess program goals and how those goals are achieved
• Have a long-term strategic plan in place for the program
• Administered by professional, qualified, and competent faculty who maintain continuing education requirements, including a program director who holds a graduate degree in speech-language pathology
• Ensure that the student clinic serves patients in a nondiscriminatory manner and that all clinical education is monitored

The 53-credit curriculum progresses from fundamental knowledge to advanced practices and competencies in speech-language pathology, preparing you to care for patients across the entire lifespan and continuum of care.

Available in both full-time (five trimesters) and part-time (eight trimesters) formats, the program comprises 22 online courses that cover the breadth and depth of speech-language pathology as it is applied to the prevention, identification, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. Our evidence-based academic curriculum, enhanced by our Christian lens, prepares you for success across all speech-language pathology settings.

Whether you desire to serve in NICUs, private practices, pediatric clinics, schools, or elderly care facilities, you’ll develop a comprehensive skill set applicable to these diverse clinical scenarios.

Depending upon prior course work, students may be required to complete all of the foundational courses before beginning the program. Most students with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders will already have completed the required courses.

Course Spotlight: Advanced Anatomy and Physiology for SLP (3 units)

Advanced study of the underlying anatomy and physiology of the basic human communication and swallowing processes, including the appropriate biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, and developmental bases across the lifespan. Covers embryonic/fetal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric anatomy and physiology related to respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, audition, mastication, deglutition, and digestion, as well as neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.

All courses and clinical requirements in the online MS in Speech-Language Pathology program are designed to meet Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) standards for certification in Speech-Language Pathology (except for the Clinical Fellowship Year for ASHA experience). During the final two trimesters, you’ll complete a Praxis preparation sequence in preparation for the Praxis Exam in Speech and Language Pathology.

Upon completing the program, you should possess the knowledge and skills required for the Praxis Exam, the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), and state licensure (requirements may vary by state). Please note, program completion does not guarantee that you’ll receive a CCC offered by ASHA or state licensure .

1) Complete 60 hours of online SpeechPathology.com courses 2) Pass the exam for each online course with score of 80% or better (open notes) 3) Submit a 2.5-page (minimum 1250 words), single-spaced narrative reflection report summarizing how the individual courses will contribute to your professional development 4) Submit a list of your completed online courses

It depends on your school district. Some school districts require pre-approval of courses before you register. It is your responsibility to check with your school district prior to registering for a graduate-level course. No refunds are given for graduate-level credit courses.

The cost is $62 per credit, paid to University of the Pacific. A CEU membership to SpeechPathology.com ($129/year) is required to access the coursework that comprises the graduate-level credit courses. Your SpeechPathology.com membership will also give you unlimited access to the SpeechPathology.com online course library.

The deadline to complete each graduate-level credit course is six months from your date of registration. You can see your specific deadline in the confirmation email that you’ll receive immediately following course registration.

If you do not complete all the course requirements by the deadline, you’ll receive an incomplete for the course.

Each graduate-level credit course aligns with specific topics in the SpeechPathology.com course library. The syllabus for each course includes links that will direct you to SpeechPathology.com courses in the topic areas that correspond to your graduate-level course(s).

Within those topic areas, you’ll choose individual courses that best suit your professional development and learning needs.

SpeechPathology.com courses that you’ve completed prior to your registration/enrollment in a graduate-level credit course cannot be used toward graduate-level credit. If you register for more than one graduate-level credit course, you must take new (unique) SpeechPathology.com courses to fulfill the required hours.

After completing all individual online courses, you will write a reflection report summarizing how the course content has enhanced your professional development. The reflection report must answer the following prompt:

Describe how the information you learned in this course will contribute to your work as a speech-language pathologist. Include examples from the SpeechPathology.com courses you completed.

Your reflection report must be typed (not handwritten), in narrative style, and free of spelling and grammatical errors as expected for graduate-level academic work.

The required length of the reflection report is based on the number of credits you want to earn (1-4).

• 1 college credit = Minimum 500 words
• 2 college credits = Minimum 750 words
• 3 college credits = Minimum 1000 words
• 4 college credits = Minimum 1250 words

The reflection report will be evaluated on the following criteria:

• Includes the minimum required word count
• Addresses the prompt
• Includes example(s) from courses
• Communicates clearly

The reflection report must be submitted by the deadline indicated in your confirmation email.

Complete this form and email the list to [email protected] along with your reflection report before the course deadline. Your deadline is six months from your date of registration.

When all course requirements are completed and submitted, the course instructor will issue your grade within 10-15 business days. You will receive an email notification of your grade from SpeechPathology.com.

If any items are missing or incomplete, you’ll be immediately notified by the program administrator so that you have an opportunity to successfully complete the course.

Yes! University of the Pacific, Benerd College is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. All courses will appear on an official transcript from the University of the Pacific registrar's office.

The email notification about your grade will include instructions for how to obtain a transcript from University of the Pacific.
