Analysis of chemical exchange in iridium N-heterocyclic carbene complexes using heteronuclear parahydrogen-enhanced NMR
Current efforts to enhance NMR signals using the signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) focus on optimizing polarization transfer from parahydrogen-derived hydride ligands to the substrate, but this requires quantitative information on ligand exchange rates, which common NMR techniques struggle to provide. Here, the authors introduce an experimental spin order transfer sequence with readout occurring at hyperpolarization-enhanced 15 N nuclei that are directly interacting with the SABRE catalyst, enabling robust evaluation of ligand chemical exchange.

Direct synthesis of α-functionalized amides via heteroatom–hydrogen insertion reactions using amide-sulfoxonium ylides
α-Functionalized Si-, Ge-, B-, Se-, and S- amide moieties are present in many medically active molecules, but their synthesis remains challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate a high-throughput synthesis using amide-sulfoxonium ylides as carbene precursors in a Si–H, Ge–H, B–H, Se–H, and S–H insertion reactions to target a wide range of α-silyl, α-geryl, α-boryl, α-selenyl, and α-sulfur (hetero)amides.
Alkali cation-π interactions in aqueous systems, modulating supramolecular stereoisomerism of nanoscopic metal-organic capsules
Contrary to common chemical intuition, cation-π interactions can persist in polar, aqueous reaction solutions, rather than in dry non-coordinative solvent systems. Here, the authors highlight how alkali ion-π interactions impart distinctive structure-influencing supramolecular forces that can be exploited in the preparation of nanoscopic metal-organic capsules.

Simultaneous generation of residue-free reactive oxygen species and bacteria capture for efficient electrochemical water disinfection
Residue-free water disinfection is vital for safe drinking water. Here the authors develop an electrochemical system for microbial eradication by employing a dual-mode mechanism and a dynamic “live microbe capture–killing–dead microbe desorption” process for continuous and effective disinfection.
Synthesis and redox catalysis of Carbodiphosphorane ligated stannylene
Heavier group 14 carbene analogue display remarkable capability for small molecule activation but their application in redox catalysis remains elusive. The Jekyll-and-Hyde electron transfer chemistry of hydrogen bonds
Hydrogen bonds get a bad rap in electronic materials because their weak, transient structure often results in poor performance. Now, this dogma has been turned on its head by intercalating molecules into two-dimensional superlattices to generate hydrogen-bonded organic–inorganic structures that feature significantly enhanced electrical conductivity.

Triplet metallocarbenes featuring carbon-centred spin localization
Open-shell carbenes, which feature two unpaired electrons on a carbene carbon centre, are highly unstable compounds and are usually observed as excited-state species. Now, two triplet metallocarbenes have been stabilized by transition-metal and silyl substituents; the compounds have been characterized by various techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy and quantum-chemical analyses.
A molecular sandwich with a lithium–aluminium filling
Compounds containing metal–metal bonds can provide fresh insights into electronic structure and bonding, and their synthesis can open up new chemical space. A sandwich complex containing a lithium–aluminium bond has now delivered some food for thought in this arena.

Polarizing the Be–Be bond
The Be–Be bond has long represented a ‘missing link’ between the H–H bond of dihydrogen and the B–B bond of diborane(4) species. Now, a complex with a polarized Be–Be bond that acts as a source of the beryllyl anion is reported. This work also reveals similarities between the homo-elemental linkages of boron and beryllium.
The synthesis behind the 2023 Nobel Prize
In 1993, a new route for the synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals was reported that exploited organometallic chemistry to afford nearly monodisperse particles. 30 years later the award of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry can be directly traced to this single publication.
Catalytic reactions with low-valency ambiphilic gallium complexes
A one-pot method is introduced for synthesizing highly reactive and potentially chiral low-valency Ga( i ) complexes, facilitating their application as a versatile catalyst.
