Early life and education

Pastor Kumuyi whose official name is William Folorunso Kumuyi was born in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State, Nigeria. He was born into an Anglican family of Mr Gabriel Kumuyi Akinfenwa and Comfort Idowu Kumuyi Akinfenwa.

William finished his secondary school in 1961. The next year, he started teaching math at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun-State. From there, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan which he completed in 1967 and earned a first-class honours degree in math. Then, William Kumuyi went back to Mayflower School to teach mathematics. After 5 years, he went to the University of Lagos to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Deeper Life Church

In 1973, while teaching Mathematics at The University of Lagos, William Folorunso Kumuyi started a small Bible study group. It consisted of 15 university students who listened to the Scriptures and Pastor’s preaches. By the ‘80s, this group had grown into a few thousand members. At this time, the Deeper Life Bible Ministry was established.

By the late ‘80s, the group had grown to 50 thousand members. It makes the Deeper Life Bible Church the 3-d largest Christian church in the world. The Deeper Life Bible Church is not only attended by so many people on Sundays, but has planted nearly a half a million churches in Lagos, 5,000 in Nigeria, and over 3,000 around the world.

Journalist Alan Isaacson provided an interesting study about Deeper Life Church in the book “Deeper Life: The Extraordinary Growth of the Deeper Life Bible Church”. The journalist talked with many members of the ministry. They told him that Christ miraculously changed their lives in response to the prayer of the Pastor and Deeper Life Church.

Pastor Kumuyi once said:

“God, in the growth of Deeper Life Bible Church, has strategically and prudently used miracles to ‘make all men come to Him’ (John 3:26). We take Christian living and holiness seriously”.

Isaacson made a conclusion that in many cases the history of Deeper Life is combined with the story of W.F. Kumuyi’s life. The journalist reported that the pastor was a gifted man, clear-thinking and humble. He was a dedicated Christian and deserved the title ‘the man of God,’ which his followers gave him. When he was younger, Kumuyi devoted a lot of time to reading and studying the Bible. He knew the Scriptures inside out and put a lot of effort into applying it.

He was one of the few preachers who spoke clearly and authoritatively to the Nigerian situation. His preaches featured high moral tone. Personal life

In 1972, Pastor William Kumuyi met his first wife, Abiodun Olowu and they have got married at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry 8 years later. They had a white wedding at The Chapel of Resurrection at the University of Lagos.

When pastor Kumuyi met his future wife Abiodun Olowu in September 1972, they began discussing a subject new to her. At the time, she was a high school student in Lagos. The Pastor told the young woman about human helplessness in the face of sinful habits and about the relationship of people and God, their Creator. He quickly told her the story of God’s love which made her interested. She decided to confess her sins and receive Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour.

Later Abiodun accepted Pastor’s marriage proposal defying all the pressure from friends and family concerning marriage. An energetic, dynamic, and visionary woman, Abiodun Kumuyi was a great helper to her Pastor-husband. She ran the women ministry in the Deeper Life Church which saw the restoration of peace in many families. The members of the ministry fondly called Abiodun Kumuyi Mummy or Mama. She also established the Christian Women Mirror magazine.

In October 2010, about 18 months after the death of his first wife, Pastor William Kumuyi married the second time in London. Pastor Kumuyi remarried to Esther Folashade Adenike Blaize.

By 1988 the congregation had grown to 50,000, and now numbers 120,000 members, making it the third largest Christian church in the world. Dr. Johan Combrinck reports that the Deeper Life Bible Church not only has an attendance of 120,000 every Sunday, but has planted 500 churches in Lagos, 5,000 in the rest of Nigeria (with an independent estimate of more than 800,000 members in Nigeria alone), and 3,000 elsewhere (with missionaries to 40 countries of Africa) as the movement missionary contribution. Dr. C. Peter Wagner, in an article titled ‘Those Amazing Post-Denominational Churches’ wrote: “By far, the most rapidly growing segment of Christianity on all six continents is a type of church that does not fit traditional categories or classifications. Missiologists have recognized its presence for some time, but it is such a recent phenomenon that they have not yet agreed on a name for it. Perhaps one title that would fit is the term ‘post-denominational.”

“Go to almost any metropolitan area and ask to visit the largest Christian Church. Chances are it will be one of these new post-denominational churches’. In Lagos, Nigeria, it would be the Deeper Life Bible Church, pastored by William Kumuyi. How Did It Happen?

Journalist Alan Isaacson provides a helpful study of this phenomenal ministry in his book  Deeper Life , talking with many members of the church who told him how Christ has miraculously intervened and changed lives in response to prayer and the proclamation of the Gospel. In Pastor Kumuyi’s own words: “God, in the growth of Deeper Life Bible Church, has strategically and prudently used miracles to make all men come to Him’ (John 3:26). We take Christian living and holiness seriously.”

According to Isaacson, The history of Deeper Life is very much the personal story of W.F. Kumuyi. He is a gifted man, clear-thinking and humble. He is a dedicated Christian and deserves the title “the man of God,” which his followers have given him. Since he was a young man, Kumuyi has devoted his time to reading and studying the Bible. He knows the Scriptures inside out, and has struggled to understand and apply them. As he shares that struggle and his love for the word of God, so people have been drawn to him for advice, or simply to listen. When he preaches, his message is clear, simple, and profound. Poor street traders who can barely read sit next to university professors, all equally captivated by the way Scripture becomes suddenly relevant to them. Pastor Kumuyi’s own Christian life developed because he took the Bible so seriously, and so the Deeper Christian Life Ministry has developed in the same way. In Alan Isaacson’s own words, he “preached Deeper Life into existence.” His sermons were captivating, wrote Isaacson, “I would classify him as one of the greatest living preachers, giving a straightforward Bible-based message,his sermons thorough, and always personally challenging. He always gave a wide range of cross-references which were read in their context, supporting, clarifying and expanding his main points. He spoke clearly and authoritatively to the Nigerian situation. He dealt sensitively with African culture, but also made a firm stand in highlighting the points where local culture was incompatible with the will of God. While stressing the high moral tone which is one of the virtues of most African cultures at their best, he was at pains to specify those aspects of local culture which were unchristian and even evil. In this way he was not only concerned with some kind of personal holiness, but also genuinely seeking the wholeness and harmony of the community at large, where truth, honesty, and justice should be the predominant characteristics.

A Man With a Great Heart For God!

He is not tall, and does not have a larger-than-life character. He does not dominate, nor has he accrued power to himself. He walks slowly, is relaxed, and has a gentle sense of humour with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He dresses simply, eats simply… and… could have assumed titles to himself. As the Deeper Christian Life Ministry developed – most people enjoy the trappings and regalia of status which followers gladly give. But he calls his followers brothers and sisters, and treats them as colleagues.

W.F. Kumuyi was born in 1941 into an Anglican home. It was a very strict Christian home, he told Isaacson, “We would get up in the morning, read the Bible, sing hymns, and go to church regularly. When I went to secondary school I lost interest in the church because our principal taught us atheism. But after a while I thought again and started going to various churches in town. Eventually, in 1963, a group of singers and preachers from a Gospel church got permission to come to the school. I understood the Gospel message, and was born again on April 5th, 1964. I read John Wesley, Charles Finney, Spurgeon, and lots of other books. I got involved with the Scripture Union, and I grew.”

From Professor to Preacher!

He gained a first-class degree in Mathematics at the University of Ibadan; then went back to Mayflower School to teach. After five years he went to the University of Lagos to do a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and became a lecturer there in 1973; and that was when he started a small Deeper Life Bible Study group.

In speaking to a group of Pastors under his leadership as General Superintendent, W. F. Kumuyi said: “Our emphasis should be on the practical side of going out. If the Lord comes, let him meet us working for him. Now every time I preach I try to mention evangelism. I have told all the Lagos District Coordinators and Zonal Leaders to spend half their time on evangelism and only half their time on their members. There will always be problems in the church: don’t let them take up all your time”.

Concluding his book, Isaacson writes, “And, of course, Deeper Life are self-governing. Kumuyi is the founder & General Superintendent, and he carries a tremendous weight in pastoring the Gbagada (Lagos) church alone, quite apart from the (now thousands) of other congregations across Nigeria and the rest of the world. He is a remarkable leader, one of God’s people for this generation. Kumuyi has received a great deal from God, but he is adept at passing along what he receives. My feeling is that what God has given his people through Kumuyi will be kept and developed long after Kumuyi is gone. This has been God’s work, and to Him be the glory.”

Biography Of Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi  is the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church . He is a Pastor, Author and Televangelist. Kumuyi is popularly known for his Holiness Preaching.

Born (June 6 1941) into the family of Mr. Gabriel Kumuyi Akinfenwa, Comfort Idowu Kumuyi Akinfenwa, an Anglican family in Erin-Ijesha, Osun State, Nigeria, he completed his secondary school education in 1961, and in 1962 started teaching mathematics at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun-State, from where he proceeded to the University of Ibadan and in 1967 graduated with a first-class honours degree in mathematics. Though he grew up as a church boy with Christian parents in his early days, he lost interest in Church at some points in his life.

He has this to say:

Ministry And Personal Life

In 1973, while serving as Math Lecturer at The University of Lagos, W.F. Kumuyi started a Bible study group with 15 university students who had come to him requesting training in the Scriptures.

A former Anglican who joined the Apostolic Faith Church after being baptised, Kumuyi was in 1975, expelled from the church for preaching without credentials. However, he continued his independent ministry, which later became the Deeper Life Bible Church.

It was during his university years that he dedicated his life to Christ and became a born-again Christian in 1964. He joined the Scripture Union (SU) and became actively involved in evangelical activities on campus. After completing his undergraduate studies in 1962, Kumuyi began working as a Mathematics teacher at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria.

From there, he became a lecturer of Mathematics at the University of Lagos. During this time, he encountered some literature from the Higher Life movement, which emphasized holiness, sanctification, and a deeper relationship with God. These teachings deeply impacted Kumuyi and shaped his spiritual beliefs.

In 1973, He Laid the Foundation for the Deeper Life Bible Church

In 1973, Kumuyi felt a strong calling to establish a ministry that would focus on holiness, the study of the Bible, and evangelism. He started a Bible study group in his living room in Lagos, Nigeria, with only 15 people in attendance.

Kumuyi was expelled from the Apostolic Faith Church in 1975 for preaching the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. However, he continued until 1982, when this small gathering eventually grew into what is now known as the Deeper Life Bible Church.

The church experienced significant growth under Kumuyi’s leadership, spreading throughout Nigeria and expanding internationally. Pastor Kumuyi’s ministry has placed a significant emphasis on personal holiness, biblical teaching, evangelism, and social impact.

Who Is Kumuyi’s Spiritual Father?

Many men of God and preachers have spiritual fathers who in one way or another influenced their beliefs. Pastor Kumuyi has three men whom he studied their works keenly and inculcated some of their teachings in his.

The three first preachers whose writings shaped and influenced Kumuyi’s religious life and ministry are Charles Finney (1792 – 1875), an American Presbyterian preacher who is known in the Christian Pentecostal world as the “Father of Modern Revivalism,” John Wesley (1703-1791), a British religious reformer and founder of the Methodist Church Movement, and Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), a Baptist preacher and founder of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London.

The restitution and sanctification teaching of John Wesley was allegedly copied by Kumuyi from Methodism. He used Finney’s promotion of salvation by grace and the affirmation of works as the basis for his lectures on an austere lifestyle and self-denial. The preaching approach used by Kumuyi is modeled after one used by Spurgeon, dubbed “the Prince of Preachers.”

Kumuyi’s Accident

Pastor W. F. Kumuyi has been involved in a few accidents and has escaped some. In 2016, during the Deeper Life Leadership Strategy Congress, he revealed to the pastors how he escaped an air crash and suffered an injury from a car accident some time ago. The accident happened between March and October 2015 and he sustained an injury in his left knee. Further details of the accident are unknown. The pastor revealed this to encourage the listeners not to give up on the work of God, no matter what.

Pastor Kumuyi’s Wife and Children

Abiodun Olowu and Pastor W. F. Kumuyi met in September 1972. She joined his young Christian ministry and started attending his weekly Bible studies. They later tied the knot on 13th September 1980, in Lagos State. Their marriage is blessed with two sons named Jeremiah and John. On 11th April 2009, Abiodun Kumuyi passed away from fractional stroke.

Just 18 months after the passing of his first spouse, Kumuyi married 65-year-old Folashade Adenike Blaize in London on 13th October 2010. The Deeper Life Bible Church in London was run by Folashade. They courted and got married at a secret wedding in London with few pastors and church members. The wedding came as news and shock to his church members as none of them expected it.

His second son, Jeremiah, lived a wayward life and eventually gave his life to Christ 10 years after his mother’s death. His first son, John, is happily married. He was suspended from the church for a while because of the kind of wedding dress his wife wore.

Pastor W. F. Kumuyi Has Been Involved in Some Scandals Inderectly

Over the years, the Deeper Life Superintendent has courted some controversies. In 2020, he was slammed for not speaking against the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old student in his school. The mother of the abused student spoke up about the abuse suffered by his son in one of the Deeper Life Schools. Don Davis was starved, molested, and sexually abused during his first two months in school. She also spoke when she was threatened by parents from the school.

This news got some reactions from social media. Some accused the pastor of preaching Christ and good morals and condoning such ill-treatment in his school. While some dragged him, others advised people to be patient and wait for his action.

The church released a statement saying that they would investigate the matter and the culprits would be punished. In 2021, the case was charged to court and those found guilty suffered for their crimes.

Besides this and some other minor scandals, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi has not been directly involved in a scandal concerning women and many other related issues. He is one of the Nigerian pastors who is free from scandals.

The Deeper Life Bible Church  is a multinational Bible-based Holiness Church. A Church that started in 1973 in Lagos Nigeria with 15 people, under the leadership of its founder and the General Superintendent – Pastor Dr. William F. Kumuyi. The Church has since grown into millions of people with branches all over Africa, Europe, Asia, Middle East, and over 90 branches in the United States of America.

Pastor William Kumuyi  is a renowned Preacher, Teacher, Evangelist, Revivalist, Trainer, and Pastor with a rare combination of God’s Grace in his Apostolic, Evangelical, and Pentecostal calling. His unwavering resolve to holiness and righteousness is one of the major reasons this ministry has stood out distinctively and continues to prosper. Under this ministry, we have recorded countless salvation of souls and the outpouring of God’s power with evident testimonies and verifiable miracles where the lame, the blind, barren, jobless, demonic, and other sick and diseased people have been healed. Surely, the Church’s history will not be complete without the likes of Pastor William Kumuyi.

Our Mission

Journalist Alan Isaacson provides a helpful study of this phenomenal ministry in his book “Deeper Life: The Extraordinary Growth of the Deeper Life Bible Church”, after talking with many members of the church who told him how Christ has miraculously intervened and changed lives in response to prayer and the proclamation of the Gospel. In Pastor Kumuyi’s own words: “God, in the growth of Deeper Life Bible Church, has strategically and prudently used miracles to ‘make all men come to Him’ (John 3:26). We take Christian living and holiness seriously.”

According to Isaacson, The history of Deeper Life is very much the personal story of W.F. Kumuyi. He is a gifted man, clear-thinking, and humble. He is a dedicated Christian and deserves the title ‘the man of God,’ which his followers have given him. Since he was a young man, Kumuyi has devoted his time to reading and studying the Bible. He knows the Scriptures inside out and has struggled to understand and apply them. As he shares that struggle and his love for the word of God, people have been drawn to him for advice, or simply to listen. When he preaches, his message is clear, simple, and profound. Poor street traders who can barely read sit next to university professors, all equally captivated by the way the Scripture becomes suddenly relevant to them.

Pastor Kumuyi’s own Christian life developed because he took the Bible so seriously, and so the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, a religious organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has developed in the same way. In Alan Isaacson’s own words, he “preached Deeper Life into existence”. His sermons were captivating, wrote Isaacson, “I would classify him as one of the greatest living preachers, giving a straightforward Bible-based message, his sermons thorough, and always personally challenging. He always gave a wide range of cross-references that were read in their context, supporting, clarifying, and expanding his main points. He spoke clearly and authoritatively about the Nigerian situation. He dealt sensitively with African culture but also made a firm stand in highlighting the points where local culture was incompatible with the will of God. While stressing the high moral tone which is one of the virtues of most African cultures at their best, he was at pains to specify those aspects of local culture which were unchristian and even evil. In this way, he was not only concerned with some kind of personal holiness, but also genuinely seeking the wholeness and harmony of the community at large, where truth, honesty, and justice should be the predominant characteristics.
